Yay, summer is almost here!
Over the past few weeks, our plastic tunnel has bid farewell to all the spring crops and is now filled with summer vegetables. From 20 different varieties of tomatoes to celery and even more unusual items like finger eggplant and Mexican mini cucumbers (Melothria), we have it all. We’ve already harvested the first pickling cucumbers and zucchini, and now our tomatoes just need the sun to turn them red.
More and more crops are yielding their harvests in our open fields as well. We’ve already been able to harvest our cherries, currants, and raspberries, as well as kohlrabi, fennel, young red beets, and a wide variety of herbs, and deliver them fresh to our two after-work restaurants.
Our cover crop, consisting of field beans and peas, has also taken root well and is now blooming in all its glory. Not only are all the insects delighted, but we humans can also enjoy the wonderfully tender pea shoots.
We’ve also had some exciting encounters with animals over the past few days. A young mother fox accompanied our gardener, Olivia, for half a day—presumably in search of food—and watched her work from a distance. We suspect there’s a fox den hidden in our garden—since plants have been knocked over overnight on several occasions and there’s a large hole under a compost pile. We’ll try to capture the vixen on a wildlife camera; let’s see if our suspicions are confirmed.
